Château de Villars Fontaine was created in the early 1970s by Bernard Hudelot, on land that had been planted with vines since the 11th century. The grapes produced are pinot noir, aligoté, gamay and chardonnay, enabling the estate to offer both red and white wines, with famous cuvées such as Jiromées, Rouard and the astonishing Gamay du Futur. The castle's history

Château Villars Fontaine is a family estate founded in 1970 by Bernard Hudelot in the commune of Villars-Fontaine in Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits, on land that had been cultivated since the 11th century, but had been gradually abandoned for reasons of climatic cooling. Moved to Côtes-de-Nuits, 100m below, Bordeaux production will return to this terroir with global warming.

In 1984, as the estate grew, Bernard Hudelot renamed it Domaine de Montmain. In 2000, the château was purchased and the estate renamed Château de Villars Fontaine.

Bernard Hudelot, a descendant of the Vikings, runs this estate with an iron fist. Having grown up in a family of mixed farmers, he cultivated his first vines with his brother in his native village at the age of less than 30. Between 1970 and 1980, he planted 18 hectares of vines and built the buildings needed for vinification and ageing. For 22 years, together with other winegrowers, he created and developed the Maison des Hautes Côtes in Marey-lès-Fussey. For 20 years, he also taught Oenological Engineering at Dijon University.

In addition, since the late 1990s, Bernard Hudelot has been involved in the development of "Vignobles de l'impossible" in Tahti, Gabon, Burma, China...

The terroir

The château's estate, known as Domaine de Montmain, extends over 30 hectares of vines, divided between 40% Grands vins blancs on Upper Jurassic white marl, and 60% reds on Middle Jurassic Dalle Nacrée stone.

Each parcel receives meticulous attention, and the grapes are harvested by hand, in small openwork crates, by experienced teams, in order to obtain fruit of the highest possible quality. The grapes are sorted several times to keep only the best.

In the winery, vinification is done the old-fashioned way, without chemical inputs over long periods, and punching down is done by hand.

The wines

The domaine cultivates under four iconic grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Aligoté and Gamay.

Chardonnay is vinified in three parcel-based cuvées: "le Clos du Château", "le Rouard" and "les Jiromées".

Pinot Noir is vinified in two parcel-based cuvées: "le Haut du Village" and "les Genévrières".

Gamay Vieilles Vignes is vinified under the Côteaux Bourguignons AOC.
