The winemaker

The history of Domaine de la Garenne

The origins of Domaine de la Garenne in Azé date back only some thirty years, while the cultivation of vines has been rooted in the region since time immemorial. The Romans had already understood the value of Burgundy's soil for growing vines. Later, the slopes were exploited by Benedictine monks in the 11th century. Domaine de la Garenne is not far from Cluny and its famous abbey.

The name Domaine de la Garenne comes from the cadastral name of the land that was cleared to reinstate the vineyard. In 2008, Éliane and René Beaumont and their children joined forces with the family of Bertrand and Christiane Devillard, descendants of the Marquis de Jouenne in Mercurey, to develop the estate.

The work quickly bore fruit, and in 2010, Domaine de la Garenne's wine was considered one of the ten best Chardonnays in all of Burgundy, by the unmissable English-language trade magazine Decanter. The domaine continues to grow, and its wines are now exported all over the world, to North America, Japan, China, England, Brazil and more than 20 other countries.

The Domaine de la Garenne vineyard

The Domaine de la Garenne vineyard covers 6 hectares dedicated to white wine made from the Chardonnay grape variety. The Mâconnais terroir is made up of hills with siliceous, clay and sandy soils, perfectly suited to this grape variety. Most of the vines face south-east.

They sit on the heights overlooking the commune of Azé, benefiting from excellent sunshine. Domaine de la Garenne is run with the greatest respect for the vines and the environment. The grapes are harvested by hand. Vinification is traditional and takes place in vats.
