The winemaker
The history of Domaine Bertagna
The Vougeot region has always been a wine-growing area. Its qualities were particularly valued during the time of the Cistercian monks who founded Clos de Vougeot in the 12th century.
Domaine Bertagna was created in 1950, in Vougeot, at the heart of the great Burgundy appellations. It lies on the prestigious Burgundy Grand Cru wine route. It was bought by Günther Reh's family in 1982 and is now owned by Éva Reh-Siddle, who has developed the estate by restructuring the vineyard and modernizing the winemaking equipment.
The Domaine Bertagna vineyard
The Domaine Bertagna vineyard covers 17 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.
The vineyard is run as naturally as possible, with respect for the land and biodiversity. The grapes are harvested by hand and picked when perfectly ripe. They are then rigorously sorted.
The vintages are aged in Burgundian barrels made from French oak, each containing 228 liters. Depending on appellation and vintage, the percentage of new barrels varies from 30% to 100%. Aging lasts between 12 and 18 months.
The grape varieties grown at Domaine Bertagna
Domaine Bertagna's grape varieties are divided between Pinot Noir for red wine and Chardonnay for white wine. Red wine production is in the majority.
The Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is one of Burgundy's finest grape varieties. It thrives in the region's cool, temperate climate. Pinot Noir gives Domaine Bertagna's red wine its very fruity, red-fruit aromas (strawberry, raspberry and cherry), as well as its woody notes reminiscent of mushrooms and wet leaves.
Pinot Noir benefits from perfectly balanced acidity and light tannic notes that bring elegance and finesse to the wine, on a complex structured background.
The Chardonnay
Chardonnay is a grape variety that adapts to terroirs all over the world, but it's in Burgundy that it thrives and expresses all its finesse and elegance. Domaine Bertagna's limestone soils enable it to reveal a complex aromatic palette. There are aromas of green apples and pears, white fruits such as peach and lychee, as well as notes of white flowers, almonds, hazelnuts and citrus.
