Appellation Coteaux Bourguignons

Discovering the AOC Coteaux Bourguignons

The regional appellation can be produced throughout the Burgundy vineyards. It was formerly called Bourgogne-grand-ordinaire or Bourgogne-ordinaire. The wines of the Coteaux Bourguignons can be produced in three colours, but white wine remains a minority. Indeed, white grape varieties cover only 30 of the 268 hectares of the AOC.

Planted in the Coteaux Bourguignons are a large number of grape varieties. The gamay, pinot noir and caesar are devoted to the production of red and rosé wines. The chardonnay, aligoté, melon de Bourgogne, pinot blanc and pinot gris are used in the production of white wines.

The vines enjoy a temperate oceanic climate, and are planted on a wide range of soils: there are cracks, granites, limestones and marls depending on the plot.

3 colours and a lot of diversity in the Coteaux Bourguignons wines

Indeed, the multitude of grape varieties and the differences in soils resulted in a great variety in the wines. It is difficult to give them a single description, but some common traits can be identified.

Red Burgundy wines

The red wines of the AOC have a purple coat with purple highlights. The nose is straightforward with red and black fruits, such as strawberry, raspberry, black currant and blackberry. On the palate, wines made from gamay are supple, fruity and have fine tannins. Pinot Noir, on the other hand, brings more body, richness and complexity. These red wines are best enjoyed with roast poultry, grilled red meats, and pasta and rice in tomato sauce.

Coteaux Bourguignons rosés

Coteaux Bourguignons rosés have a bright pink colour. The nose reveals scents of small red fruits such as redcurrant or wild strawberry, as well as notes of candy. On the palate, these rosés are fresh and fruity. Rosés are ideal with vegetable-based cuisine: stuffed vegetables, in a wok, in a pie or quiche... They are also very pleasant as an aperitif with slices of chorizo.

White Burgundy wines

The white wines have a golden coat, quite clear. The nose offers scents of white flowers, particularly acacia, and citrus. The palate reveals itself fresh and citrusy when Chardonnay is in the majority, while Aligoté gives livelier wines. The white Coteaux Bourguignons go very well with pan-fried or papillote fish, seafood pasta such as cockles, or even with Comté cheese.
