Clos de Tart
Clos de Tart is located in Burgundy, more precisely in Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte d'Or. It produces a Grand Cru de la Côte de Nuit, a French appellation d'origine contrôlée wine. Its vineyards are quite singular, thanks to their diverse nature and terroir. The orientation of its vines is also unusual. They are planted from north to south. The entire estate is surrounded by a historic dry-stone wall, which was restored in 2006. In its entirety, it extends for 1.2 km, hence the name "Clos". Find out more

The winemaker
A little history
Clos de Tart was founded in 1141 by the Bernardine nuns of Tart Abbey. The Clos became the property of the Marey-Monge family in 1791, before being sold to the Mommessin family, originally from the Mâconnais region, in 1932. In almost a thousand years, Clos de Tart has known only three lines of owners. Since its creation, it has never been divided up, making it the largest Monopole classified as a Grand Cru in Burgundy. Le Clos obtained its own AOC in 1939. It was given a new lease of life following the arrival of Sylvain Pitiot, estate manager. From the 1996 vintage onwards, his wines underwent a meteoric rise in quality. This winemaker retired from the domaine in 2015, leaving his place to Jacques Devauges, the former technical director of Domaine de l'Arlot. Groupe Artémis, an investment company owned by the Pinault family, bought the 7.53 hectares of Clos du Tart in 2018.
His vineyard and his wine
This 7.53-hectare vineyard is owned by Artémis and has been governed by Alessandro Noli since March 2019. It is one of the village's five grands crus. Pinot noir grapes are used exclusively for the red wines of the AOC. The grapes are harvested at peak ripeness by hand, with vinification depending on the plot. Pinot Noir is vinified in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months, and 85% of the grapes are destemmed.
The wine is highly regarded, with an annual production of 226 hectoliters, or over 30,000 bottles. 65% of production is exported, mainly to the USA, Switzerland, the UK, Canada and Japan. In some years, the domaine produces a second wine called "La Forge de Tart", downgraded to Morey-Saint-Denis premier cru. This is to enhance the quality of Clos de Tart.
During 2016, Clos de Tart saw the arrival of biodynamic practices, with Biodyvin certification to follow in 2019. The estate also inaugurated a new winery with the 2019 vintage. It went from 7 stainless steel vats to 14 truncated-cone wooden vats of various sizes. This will enable us to go even further in expressing the full diversity and complementarity of the parcels on this terroir.
