Château de Marsannay
(16 customer reviews)
In the heart of Burgundy, just outside Dijon, Château de Marsannay boasts 28 hectares in the appellation of the same name. At the beginning of the 20th century, Marsannay was a prestigious Côte de Nuits appellation. After falling into oblivion, it has undergone a veritable renaissance in recent years, particularly since obtaining its AOC in 1987, and Château de Marsannay is one of the architects of this renaissance. The winemaker
An exceptional terroir
The Château boasts exceptionally rich terroirs with parcels in Ruchottes-Chambertin, Chambertin, Echezeaux, Clos de Vougeot, Champeaux and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Bel-Air. An application for Premier Cru status is currently under consideration for 13 of these parcels.
Burgundy boasts more than 100 appellations, yet only one grape variety, Pinot Noir, is used to produce red wines, and only one for white wines, Chardonnay. It's the great diversity of soils and climates that enables the region to boast such a large number of appellations. This specificity has been recognized as unique in the world by UNESCO, and the climats of Burgundy are now classified as a World Heritage Site.
Know-how
The teams at Château de Marsannay practice sustainable agriculture, with controlled yields, close attention to grape quality and manual harvesting. The Château features vaulted cellars typical of Burgundy, in the tradition of the Cistercian cellars found at Château de Meursault, for example. Built on two levels, they are nine meters deep. They enable wines to be matured at a temperature of 15 degrees, with a good level of humidity, and can accommodate 400,000 bottles.
The wines
Château de Marsannay's wines have won numerous awards. It's hard to list just a few, as the Château's production is so rich and varied. The estate produces mainly red wines, but there are also two white wines and a rosé in Côte de Nuits.
Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is an exceptional cuvée. This wine has a limpid color, with cherry-red hues. The nose is elegant, with aromas of wild berries and a hint of spice. A perfect match for eggplant caviar or duck breast.
Marsannay Clos du Roy is a cuvée made from old vines of limited surface area, planted on limestone gravel soil. It is produced in a limited number of bottles and has won several awards. The wine is both generous and racy, with aromas of red fruits.
Echezeaux Grand Cru is a brilliant wine, featuring cranberry, bramble and forest fruit flavors. Awarded by the Revue du Vin de France, the cuvée has an ageing potential of 8 to 25 years. Marsannay Blanc is a fresh Chardonnay made from a blend of several climates. This full-bodied, well-balanced wine has a golden yellow color and beautiful yellow fruit flavors.
Bourgogne du Château is a full-bodied cuvée with a gourmet, round palate and black fruit aromas.
