The history of Château de Chamirey

Château de Chamirey was built in Mercurey in the 18th century, on a rocky outcrop that dominates the square. Built with an Italian influence, its gardens are nevertheless "à la française". Its towers were built at the end of the same century, following a fire that destroyed the chapel adjoining the château.

The Dupaty de Clam family estate then passed into the hands of the Marquis de Jouennes d'Herville family. The current owners, Amaury and Aurore Devillard, are descendants of the de Jouennes family and represent the fifth generation.

Since 1934, the wines have been bottled directly at Château de Chamirey, thanks to the Marquis de Jouennes, who had the necessary equipment installed. His son-in-law continued to improve and expand the estate, which today covers 37 hectares.

The Château de Chamirey vineyard

The Château de Chamirey vineyard comprises 27 hectares planted with red grapes and 10 hectares planted with white grapes. 15 hectares are Premiers Crus. The most prestigious are Les Ruelles, in red, and La Mission, in white.

The estate has the particularity of being planted with extreme density, in the Burgundian tradition. There are 10,000 vines per hectare, far more than in other regions.

The Château de Chamirey vineyard is run using integrated viticulture methods. Treatments are kept to a minimum, with the aim of respecting the environment. The average age of the estate's vines is 35 years. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand.

The wines of Château de Chamirey

La Mission - Mercurey Premier Cru - Monopole - blanc

Château de Chamirey holds the monopoly on the La Mission parcel. It is located on a rocky, limestone terrace above the Clos du Roi Premier Cru, and enjoys an easterly exposure. The vines were planted between 1961 and 1997.

La Mission boasts a superb golden color with lovely, brilliant highlights. The nose is expressive and dense. The palate is floral with bergamot dominating, fruity with pineapple and lychee flavors, and completed by mineral notes.

The palate offers a perfect balance between the wine's roundness and its acidity. Aromatic persistence accompanies the long finish. The wine can be drunk young or kept for up to 15 years.

Mercurey Clos de la Maladière - red

Clos de la Maladière rests on a predominantly clayey limestone soil, garnished with small pebbles. The terrain is slightly sloping, with south-to-north exposure.

Mercurey's color is an intense ruby, with brilliant purplish highlights. The nose is pronounced and complex. There are floral notes, as well as red fruits such as wild strawberry and Morello cherry.

The palate is intense and offers splendid aromatic persistence. The finish remains fruity to the end. Château de Chamirey's Mercurey Clos de la Maladière can be enjoyed young or kept for up to 5 years.
