The winemaker
The history of Domaine Belena
Domaine Belena belongs to the Schenk group, founded in Rolle, Switzerland, in 1893. When Arnold Schenk, son of the company's founder Charles, inherited the company, his primary aim was to create a wine merchant with a European reach.
Arnold and his successors conquered new territories over the following century: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Benelux and Great Britain. The Schenk Group became a pan-European structure unique in the wine world in terms of production.
With a view to continually investing in new vineyards, the Schenk Group decided to explore the Burgundy region with the acquisition of Domaine Belena.
The Domaine Belena vineyard
The Domaine Belena vineyard extends mainly over the Hautes Côtes de Beaune terroir, from Ladoix Serrigny to Santenay. The Hautes Côtes de Beaune AOC was recognized in 1961.
The grape varieties planted are typical of Burgundy wines:
- Aligoté ;
- Chardonnay ;
- Pinot Noir.
Burgundy's winegrowing history began as early as the 1st century AD, with the arrival of the Romans, and was then continued by the lesser Cistercians whose abbeys were surrounded by vines. Domaine Belena produces white and red Burgundy wines. Domaine Belena's red wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes.
Chardonnay is the main white grape variety, accompanied by Aligoté. Both are considered members of the Noirien family, as they are descended from Pinot Noir. Aligoté and Chardonnay are in fact crosses between Pinot Noir and Gouais. Chardonnay originated in Burgundy, but is now grown all over the world, while Aligoté remains a Burgundy specialty.
