Appellation Beaune

The Beaune AOC, a land of Premiers Crus

North of Pommard, the town of Beaune, known for its hospices founded in 1445, is home to the Bureau Interprofessionnel des vins de Bordeaux, but not only that... The appellation is located in the commune of the town of Beaune, and has no less than 42 Premiers Crus.

Two main grape varieties are planted in the appellation: the pinot noir and the chardonnay. The climate of the region is cool oceanic, and some disturbances are brought by the Rhône-Saône axis.

The vines enjoy various exposures which create wines with different characters. In the North, we find rather intense wines and in the South rather round wines. The soils are also varied, calcareous at the top of the slopes and increasingly clayey on the way down.

The Beaune AOC tasting

AOC Beaune Rouge

With a bright, luminous red colour, Beaune red wines develop a nose of black fruits such as blackcurrant and blackberry and red fruits, redcurrant in particular. Scents of leather, truffle and undergrowth will be brought in over time.

On the palate, AOC Beaune Rouge is fresh, on the grape, when young, and becomes firm, full-bodied and straightforward with age. Pairing this wine with game and strong cheeses such as maroilles is ideal.

AOC Beaune Blanc

White wines bearing the Beaune appellation have a golden colour with green highlights. Their nose is on almonds, dried fruits, fern, white flowers, but also on honey and cinnamon. The palate is on the fruit when the wine is young, and becomes fat with time.

This white wine will go well with poultry, a fish tagine or grilled fish when young. When older, it will go very well with a Comté cheese or certain goat's cheeses.
