The winemaker
The history of Château Dauzac
The first recorded owner of Château Dauzac was Pétrus d'Auzac. He was given the land by the famous Richard the Lionheart - King of England, Count of Poitiers, Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Maine and Count of Anjou.
The first traces of the Château Dauzac vineyard were mentioned by the Benedictine monks of Bordeaux's Sainte-Croix Abbey in 1545. They referred to the building as Bourdieu, meaning a country house with a vineyard. At the time, Château Dauzac belonged to wine merchants, the Drouillard family.
Château Dauzac was the birthplace of Bordeaux mixture. This mixture of copper sulfate and milk of lime saved the vineyards from mildew. To this day, it remains a recipe used the world over.
Over the centuries, Château Dauzac has had many owners, both private and corporate, including the Maif insurance company. In 2020, it was bought by the Roulleau family.
The Château Dauzac vineyard
The Château Dauzac vineyard covers 49 hectares in a single block: 45 hectares belong to the Margaux appellation and 4 hectares to the Haut Médoc appellation. It is close to the Gironde estuary, benefiting from the oceanic influence, yet protected from ocean winds by 120 hectares of meadow and forest.
Every effort is made to preserve biodiversity. Sheep graze in the park to maintain and enrich it, while a dozen beehives produce honey sold at the château. Some of the plots are grassed to better regulate water supply.
Château Dauzac's terroir benefits from a gravelly hilltop, made up of layers of varying thickness and resting on a clay and gravel subsoil. Working in parcels enables us to produce a wide range of wines, all with quality in common.
The estate's grape varieties are 69% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes are grown using viticulture raisonnée, with only organic fertilizers. No insecticides are used. Grapes are harvested by hand.
Chateau Dauzac red wine
Château Dauzac is the estate's first wine. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon is by far the majority, accounting for around two-thirds of the blend, which can fluctuate depending on the vintage.
Château Dauzac is a complex wine of great aromatic diversity. It finds its balance between the minerality of Cabernet Sauvignon, and the silkiness and roundness of Merlot. Its color is a deep red with hints of brick.
The nose exhales flavors of mocha and baked prunes, toasted notes of bread crust, as well as aromas of undergrowth and mushrooms. The palate is very ripe and concentrated, backed by round tannins.
Château Dauzac is at its best between 10 and 15 years. It can be aged for up to 20 years.
