The winemaker
The history of Vieux Château Certan
Vieux Château Certan is one of Pomerol's oldest known crus. It was founded in the early 16th century by the Demay family from Scotland. The château takes its name from the Certan locality. In 1858, Vieux Château Certan was bought by Charles de Bousquet. He undertook extensive renovations that gave the château its current appearance. In 1924, Vieux Château Certan was bought by wine merchant Georges Thienpont. He came from the Flemish Ardennes and decided to settle permanently in the Pomerol appellation. The estate is now run by his grandson, Alexandre Thienpont.
The Vieux Château Certan vineyard
The Vieux Château Certan vineyard covers 14 hectares in a single block. It is divided into 23 plots, managed independently according to soil type, grape variety and vine age. The most clayey parcels, representing 70% of the vineyard, are planted with Merlot. Cabernet Franc, which accounts for 25%, occupies the clay-gravel parcels. The remaining 5% are very gravelly plots planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. The average age of the vines is 50 years.
The Vieux Château Certan wines
Vieux Château Certan wines are a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The château offers two great wines.
- Vieux Château Certan
Vieux Château Certan is made from the oldest vines. It is a highly concentrated, fruity wine. It will keep for 10 to 15 years.
- La Gravette de Certan
The second wine is La Gravette de Certan. It is made from the youngest vines. It resembles Vieux Château Certan, but is best enjoyed young.
