In a few words ...

The mythical Château Beychevelle label depicts a boat, a reference to the 15th-century owner who used to lower the sails of ships (becha vela in Gascon). Located at the entrance to the commune of Saint Julien, this fourth Grand Cru Classé is one of the most iconic châteaux in the Médoc. From the 14th century onwards, numerous owners succeeded one another at what was then known as the "Château du Médoc", a clear indication of its importance at the time. The name "beychevelle" came later from a tribute to the Duke of Epernon. Owner of the estate in the XVth century, he was a great admiral of France, in respect of whom ships passing through the estuary in front of the estate recommended the action of "lowering the sails", "becha vela" in Gascon. The front of the ship, illustrated on the label by a griffin, represents the guardian of the wine crater of Dionysus in Greek mythology. Having no descendants, the admiral left the estate to the crown, which resulted in the dismemberment of the property, giving rise to the châteaux branaire-ducru and saint-pierre to the west of the estate, and château ducru-beaucaillou to the north. The estate?s wine development dates back to the end of the seventeenth century, with the arrival of jean-pierre dabadie? First president of the second chamber of inquiry at the Bordeaux parliament? Who began replanting the vines following severe frosts. François-armand de brassier took over the family business from his father - nephew of president dabadie - in 1740, and it was under his aegis that, after a fire, work began on the magnificent chartreuse that still marks the entrance to saint-julien today.after being seized as national property during the revolution, the château was sold to jacques conte, a Bordeaux shipowner, who sold it 25 years later to his nephew pierre-françois guestier, wine merchant, deputy mayor of bordeaux, mayor of saint-julien, member of parliament and owner of château batailley. The château will be classified
