Appellation Saint-Julien
The Saint-Julien AOC is nicknamed the "middle country"
The Saint Julien vineyard is located on a peninsula, on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, not far from the Landes forest. The vineyards of the Médoc, extend over an area 50 km long and 15 km wide. The appellation d'origine contrôlée, benefits from a meagre area of cultivation, between Pauillac and Margaux. Despite its small surface area, the Saint Julien vineyard nevertheless offers 11 classified growths. They alone represent 80% of the AOC.
These grands crus are found in the Châteaux Beychevelle, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Talbot, but also in the famous Château Léoville Las Cases. Lovers of good wines, are necessarily connoisseurs of Bordeaux wines. Indeed, the reputation of Bordeaux vineyards is recognized. These are centuries of know-how that come from it.
As far back as antiquity, the art of winegrowing appeared in the Bordeaux region. The wines of the Médoc began to stand out from their Gironde neighbours, from the 17th century onwards. Year after year, the Médoc's wine lands, have increased the reputation of this unique region. In 1855, given the undeniable quality of these vineyards, Napoleon III, even decided to have an official classification drawn up, specific to the region.
The AOC-AOP Saint Julien, is therefore one of the 42 appellations of Bordeaux wines which are the most sought after and legendary wines in the world. In addition to its incredible and unique wine production, the Médoc, in particular, is rich in history and breathtaking architecture. It is home to wineries with majestic chateaux and historic buildings to be discovered along the region's roads.
What are the characteristics of the Saint-Julien vineyards?
The Saint Julien vineyard, like the rest of the Médoc, enjoys a temperate oceanic climate. The commune of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle is surrounded by two huge bodies of water, between the river and the ocean. The Gironde and the Atlantic Ocean, thus bring a very high rate of humidity, approximately 80 % in the year.
As for the soils, they offer a very specific terroir to the region. The vines are planted mainly on chalky, stony, marl and gravel soils. These poor soils, force the vines to root deep into the subsoil. They are particularly robust and unique. The main grapes of Saint Julien are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet-sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit verdot.
The vineyard can produce up to 55 hectolitres per hectare each year, for a maximum crop density of 10,000 vines per hectare. In surface area, the Saint Julien vineyard represents only 6% of the Médoc vineyard, with only 910 hectares of vineyards.
Saint Julien wines have a rare ability to age
They are red wines, dry, ruby-coloured when young; becoming deeper and darker with age. After a dozen years or so, this wine may surprise with a black colour. Indeed, the wines of Saint Julien have a rare ability to age. They are called "still wines", which can be kept for up to 10, 20 years, or even more for the great vintage wines.
The Saint Julien offers a bouquet of complex and delicate aromas. Young, it reveals notes of black and red fruits, such as blackberry or blueberry. With age, or as a second nose, it can reveal scents of cocoa, coffee, even truffle or game; and even surprising aromas of leather.
On the palate, the palate is elegant, firm and powerful. It is concentrated, velvety and offers a woody taste, tinged with elegance. When young, it is delicious. As it ages, its taste is strengthened, sometimes flowery. It is typically the kind of wine that it is nice to forget in your cellar, only to rediscover it many years later.
What are the great vintages of the Saint-Julien appellation?
The AOC-AOP Saint Julien, like many Bordeaux wines, offers wines of remarkable quality, great vintages and above all, exceptional vintage wines. Among these, we must remember the year 2005, which is considered the vintage of the millennium. But also the year 2009, which is an exceptional vintage for the Saint Julien. Other great vintages were produced in the years: 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
To go back in time, we also think of the Saint Julien of 1928, 1947, 1985 and 2000.
What to enjoy a Saint Julien with?
Médoc wines are suitable for every situation! White or red meat, grilled or in sauce; poultry and game, but also cold meats or cheeses... There is a Médoc for every taste. More precisely, it is generally appropriate to accompany a Saint Julien with delicate and refined dishes, such as a dish of veal shank with truffles, pheasant, or a pan-fried cep mushroom.
