"we don't want to make a speculative wine. Château canon is meant to be drunk", says nicolas audebert, director of the estate. Purchased in 1760 by jacques kanon, a frigate lieutenant and privateer from blaye, the property consisted of a 13-hectare walled enclosure. Already entirely dedicated to wine production, the estate was extended by jacques kanon who, in addition to leaving his name to the château, bought several parcels adjacent to the walled enclosure before selling it in 1770.the château changed name several times through its various 19th-century purchasers, becoming "château canon saint-émilion". Owners since 1919, the fournier family renovated the vats and cellars before selling this jewel to the wertheimer brothers, owners of the luxury brand chanel. Known in the Bordeaux region for having acquired the 2nd cru classé rauzan-ségla in margaux two years earlier, the arrival of the three brothers heralded the beginnings of canon?s renaissance. Located to the north-west of saint-emilion, near clos fourtet and château beau-séjour bécot, the estate certainly rests on exceptional limestone soil, but the vines were suffering at the time. The new team took advantage of the acquisition of three hectares on a neighboring plot to pull out some old vines and put the land to rest. After several seasons of patience, and 20 years of titanic work, john kolasa gave way in 2014 to nicolas audebert. Ex-?nologist at Champagne Krug and the Cheval des Andes estate in Argentina (created by Cheval Blanc), he didn't hesitate for a second when chanel called him: "I accepted chanel's proposal without visiting the estate. I knew the wine! Here, we have without doubt the most beautiful terroir and the best exposure in Saint-Emilion. Canon benefits from the clay-limestone soils and meteorological conditions of the upper plateau.
