In a few words ...

In ancient Greek, ozô means "that exhales a fragrance". The vineyard inherits its name from the poet Decimus magnus ausonius, born in Bazas in the Gironde. A professor and political advisor in the Lower Roman Empire, he is considered to be the first representative of French Latin literature and, more generally, one of the pioneers of the use of modern Latin. The name was given to the cru when founder Jean Cantenat discovered Gallo-Roman remains on the château grounds. Few crus are so exceptional that they have been awarded two 100/100 ratings by the American critic Robert Parker. Such is the case with the illustrious Château Ausone. An emblematic figure in the medieval town of Saint-Emilion, it is one of the appellation?s two most renowned crus, alongside Château Cheval Blanc. Situated on the steep southern slopes of the Saint-Martin plateau, Château Ausone dominates the Saint-Emilion vineyards not only by its position, but also by the quality of its cru. The land has had several owners, who until the 18th century exploited the subsoil to extract stone. The estate?s winemaking history began under the name of "cru cantenat à la madeleine". Construction of the château began in 1781 under the ausone creator jean cantenat. Five years later, he gave the name ausone to the cru following the discovery of Gallo-Roman remains reported a few years earlier by the parish priest of Saint-Martin. Through marriage, the dubois-challon family took over the management of the cru with jean-édouard dubois in 1891. Today, it is the vauthier family and its descendants who oversee the destiny of château ausone, which since the Second World War has been sold at the same price as the medoc?s 1er crus classés. In 1916, through intergenerational inheritance, the family acquired the neighboring Château Belair, now known as Saint-Emilion?s Premier Grand Cru Classé, and renamed it Château Belair-Monange. It was later divided, leaving the family with a share of the estate.
