    In a few words ...

First growth classified in 1855, Château Haut-Brion has a singular history. The first truly Bordeaux wine château is located on a terroir planted with vines as far back as Gallo-Roman times, in the 1st century. The first Bordeaux cru to be named after its terroir, rather than its owner or parish, Château Haut-Brion became the world's first luxury brand in 1521. Its history is that of some of the most prestigious wines to have marked the distinctive heritage of the Bordeaux region over the centuries. The only premier cru classé outside the Médoc to have been included in the 1855 classification, Château Haut-Brion is unique in that it is totally enclosed within the town of Pessac, Bordeaux's closest suburb. Its terroir, like that of mission haut-brion, pape-clément or carmes haut-brion, is certainly the earliest in the appellation, and the grapes, almost equal parts merlot and cabernet-sauvignon (which sets it apart from the medoc's premier crus classés), ripen perfectly here, producing a full, rich wine that develops inimitable smoky notes as it ages. Tasting notes

    Appearance

The wines have a dense but lighter robe than the medoc. The hue is ruby with a touch ranging from purple to brick depending on the evolution.

    Aroma

The bouquet is often fruity, with currant and other red and black fruits to which are added smoked or roasted notes.

    Taste

Composed on average of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, the red wines of Pessac-Léognan make a good compromise between marked tannins and the greediness of the fruit. We thus find red and ripe fruits, and empyreumatic notes.
