Did you know that the sumptuous Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux, inaugurated in 1780, served as a model for the construction of Château Pontet-Canet? In the heart of Pauillac, two of the estate?s buildings were constructed in succession: the first in 1755 and the second, the main part, in 1781. The colonnade is very similar to that of the grand theater. On the outskirts of the famous châteaux mouton rothschild and d?armailhac, the history of pontet-canet began in 1705, when jean-françois de pontet? former grand ecuyer to the king of france louis xv and governor of the medoc? bought a few plots of land. In keeping with tradition, he named the vineyard after his surname and the locality of the plots, thus becoming Château Pontet-Canet. His descendants enlarged the vineyard from 17 to 81 hectares. Even today, it remains one of Pauillac?s largest winegrowing estates. The de Pontet family remained owners until 1865, when Herman Cruse, a wealthy Bordeaux merchant, bought the estate. At that time, the family owned several prestigious estates, including Château Rauzan-Ségla and Château Giscours. At the end of the 19th century, they decided to modernize the winery and winemaking process. At a time when the estate was gaining worldwide recognition, the cru was sold in 1975 to Guy Tesseron, a cognac merchant. His son alfred tesseron, now at the head of the vineyard, appointed jean-michel comme as his steward. Together, they developed the estate into one of Bordeaux's finest wines. Château Pontet-Canet is one of the forerunners of organic farming and biodynamic viticulture in the Médoc. What?s more, and relatively unique in the history of the Médoc, Château Pontet-Canet has only had three families of owners in almost three centuries.
