Located at the entrance to the appellation, the vineyard of today?s château rauzan-ségla was once part of the châteaux margaux parcels. Known as "rauzan aîné", in 1745 it was classified as the 2nd growth of margaux. Its history began in 1661 with the purchase of the parish of margaux - maison noble de gassies? by pierre desmesures de rauzan. The latter left his mark on the history of the Médoc through his work on six terroirs that are now Premier Grands Crus Classés. Former owner of the eponymous rauzan-gassies and rauzan-ségla estates, in 1661 he was also farmer of château margaux, and 19 years later became farmer of château latour. Finally, after thirty years' work, he also left his children land in the commune of Pauillac, which became châteaux Pichon-Longville Baron and Comtesse. Unanimously recognized at the time as one of the finest wineries in the Médoc, the estate was split in 1763, giving birth to Rauzan-Gassies and Rauzan-Ségla. From then on, the estate passed through a succession of owners until the arrival of luxury brand Chanel in 1994. A complete renovation of the estate was then undertaken, notably with the replanting of the vineyard under the expert guidance of john kolasa. his work was highlighted in the 2010 vintage by robert parker: "with ageing potential of half a century or more, this is a magnificent wine from rauzan ségla. Congratulations to director john kolasa for producing this profound wine, which should prove a timeless classic of the margaux appellation". Taking his leave in 2014, john kolasa was succeeded by nicolas audebert, ex-?nologist at champagne krug and domaine cheval des andes in argentina (created by cheval blanc), who is now also at the helm of château canon? Premier grand cru classé de saint-émilion? Another chanel group property.
