Appellation Listrac-Médoc
Listrac-Médoc, an appellation with a special history
The AOC Listrac-Médoc is located northwest of Bordeaux, in the commune of the same name. The appellation owes its fame in part to the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, which offered Listrac-Médoc wines on their wine list.
Obtained in 1957, the AOC now has 570 hectares of vines, divided between merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet-sauvignon and petit verdot. The plots are located on a plateau inland, thus quite far from the Gironde estuary. The vineyard enjoys a temperate climate, and is characterised by soils of gravel and clay.
The red wines of Listrac-Medoc
The wines of the AOC have a dark coat, which announces the power of the wine, accompanied by light purple highlights. The nose is marked by ripe red fruits such as strawberry and raspberry. Balsamic notes are also noticeable, followed by leather, liquorice, spices and vanilla, resulting from the wine's maturation in barrel. On the palate, the wine is very powerful and full-bodied in its youth. After a few years of cellaring, the wine becomes rounder and gains in harmony.
Listrac-Médoc requires an accompaniment to match its power, which it will find through red meats, grilled or in sauce, and game. For cheese, it is also important to choose a strong cheese, such as Saint Nectaire, which is ideal.
