The name "cantemerle" comes from a legend dating back to the Hundred Years' War: a cannon nicknamed the "merle" was inside the fortified manor house? What is the château today? When English soldiers looted the cellar and got drunk. The French used the cannon, and its enormous noise caused the terrified English soldiers to stampede. Thus was born the expression "chante merle", meaning château cante... merle. Located in the commune of Macau, on the southern border of the Margaux appellation, between Châteaux Giscours and Lagune, both 3rd Growth Classified, Château Cantemerle is one of the four valiant Haut-Médoc wines included in the 1855 classification. In the 13th century, the château was part of a fortified line defending the banks of the Gironde, until its main activity became wine-making in the late 15th century. The lords of cantemerle succeeded one another at the head of the estate until the arrival of louis de villeneuve de durfort in the 17th century. His descendants remained at cantemerle for two centuries, enhancing its reputation with quality wines exported to countries such as the Netherlands. After a succession of owners and the German occupation during the Second World War, the estate was bought by an insurance company. The latter entrusted management of the estate to the Cordier trading house, which invested heavily in rebuilding the vineyards and renovating the buildings. Dark fruit notes with blackcurrant and blackberry, followed by empyreumatic scents that vary between vanilla, roasting and a hint of cinnamon.
