Haut Médoc is located upstream from the Gironde estuary. The gravelly composition of the soil encourages the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are concentrated and tannic, requiring at least 6 months of ageing. In its youth, the nose offers aromas of red and black fruits, evolving towards spices and vanilla to a greater or lesser extent with ageing. Haut-Médoc is a great wine for laying down.
The 1999 vintage was shaping up to be a good one, with both quality and quantity. But once again, a violent storm on September 5 wiped out 10% of St Emilion. The situation in the other appellations was no better, but the winegrowers were able to save the ripe grapes thanks to the September sunshine. The winemaker's hard work will be recognized by the wine's structure.
