Appellation Fronsac

The Fronsac AOC...already tasted in the court of Kings

The appellation covers 800 hectares spread over 7 communes in the region: Fronsac, Saint-Aignan, La Rivière, Saint-Michel de Fronsac, Saint-Germain-la-Rivière, Saillans and Galgon.

To the north west of the renowned appellations of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, Fronsac has not been neglected for all that. The commune of Fronsac acquired the title of duchy-prairie in the 16th century under Henry IV. It was therefore the Duke of Fronsac who made the wines of the region known: he regularly organised parties in his residence in Fronsac, which gave the wines their reputation at Versailles.

The majority grape variety in the AOC is merlot, although blends are allowed with cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. The climate of the AOC is temperate oceanic, which brings mildness and humidity, a very beneficial duo for the vines. The latter also enjoy chalky-clay soils, on hillsides, a very fertile soil for merlot.

Taste the wines of the Fronsac AOC

This red wine reveals a beautiful dark colour, ranging from dark ruby to garnet, sometimes crossed by some purplish reflections. The nose is very clear on red fruits such as redcurrant or raspberry, and develops spicy and peppery scents.

With age, there are scents of ripe black fruits, and roasted or toasted notes of coffee and cocoa. On the palate, the Fronsac is consistent, the tannins are very powerful, with age they become more mellow and there are tastes of undergrowth.

The AOC Fronsac will go very well with grilled red meat or meat in sauce, game such as venison, but also cheeses with character such as Roquefort, Brie or Camembert.
