The winemaker
The history of Château Lafite Rothschild
The name Lafite is first mentioned in 1234. It refers to Gombaud de Lafite, abbot of the Vertheuil Monastery north of Pauillac. "La hite" in Gascon means the hillock, and it would seem that the hillocks in question had already been planted with vines for a very long time.
The medieval seigneury of Lafite is attested from the 14th century onwards, but it wasn't until the estate was taken over by the Ségur family in the 17th century that the vineyard was structured and the Lafite name established for the quality of its wines. Around 1670, Jacques de Ségur began work on the Lafite vineyard.
On August 8, 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired Château Lafite, which was then put up for public sale. It was then that the estate took the name Château Lafite Rothschild. Since then, the heirs have continued to run the estate, always motivated by the passion and exacting standards that enable them to produce a wine renowned the world over.
The Château Lafite Rothschild vineyard
The Château Lafite Rothschild vineyard covers 112 hectares. It is divided into three distinct areas: the slopes around the Château; the Carruades plateau to the west; and a 4.5-hectare parcel in the neighboring commune of Saint Estèphe.
The soil is composed of fine, deep gravel. They mix with Aeolian sands on a tertiary limestone subsoil. The grape varieties grown on these well-exposed, well-drained soils are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
To produce the highest quality Château Lafite Rothschild, grapes from vines less than 10 years old are not included in the blends. The average age of the vines used is 45 years. The oldest parcel is "La Gravière", planted in 1886. Viticulture is carried out as often as possible by hand, avoiding fertilizers wherever possible and preferring to use manure. Harvesting is done by hand, as is most of the maintenance work carried out throughout the year.
The Château Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru wine
Château Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru Classé, Pauillac is a blend of 80-95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5-20% Merlot, 0-5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is aged in new barrels for between 18 and 20 months. Its ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18°C. Its color is dark red, with violet reflections of magnificent brilliance. The nose is deep, with aromas of black fruits, red fruits and cedar, typical of Lafite wines. The palate is powerful, with a long, fresh finish.
