The winemaker
Domaine La Tourbeille stands on a sunny hillside overlooking the Dordogne, surrounded by prehistoric caves and oak groves, overlooking the property's meadows and streams. The estate has been owned by our Franco-American family for 100 years; La Tourbeille has been producing wine for centuries. The original winery and riverside château were built in the early 18th century. A diary from 1763 describes how barrels were rolled from the winery to the gabares waiting on the river, then shipped to Bordeaux, England and beyond.
Today, we produce our wines in a modern winery within the vineyard. The vines benefit from the mineral-rich bedrock; the land surrounding the vineyard offers protective biodiversity. The wine fully reflects this privileged site - its sunny plateau, its mild micro-climate, its protective forests. Our land produces wines rich in red and black fruit aromas, fresh and fruity, with a touch of minerality.
In the cellar, our vats are designed for parcel-by-parcel vinification. We don't add sulfur to our red wines during fermentation to fully reveal the terroir's aromas; maceration and pumping-over are gentle to smooth out the tannins characteristic of our grape varieties, and we stir the lees by hand to add a touch of fatness.
Our red wines are rich in flavor, full-bodied and harmonious. Our Rosé "L'Esprit de Jeanne" is made with the greatest care to highlight its freshness, elegance and delicate fragrance.
Today, the 5th generation contributes its enthusiasm and energy to the family project - in the vineyards, the meadows and the winery. They have created the Taverne du Belvédère on our hillside: a convivial place with terrace, to enjoy tapas and the estate's wines, while taking in the panoramic view of the Dordogne valley.
