Appellation Côtes-de-Bourg
The Côtes-de-Bourg AOC, 4000 hectares around the citadel of Bourg
The appellation is located 35 kilometres north of Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers. It extends over 15 communes, close to the citadel of Bourg.
The vineyard of Côtes-de-Bourg has 4000 hectares, composed of more than 95% of red grape varieties such as merlot, cabernet-sauvignon, cabernet-franc, and malbec. For the few white wines in the appellation, sauvignon, colombard, and semillon are the main grape varieties.
As everywhere in the Bordeaux region, vines were introduced in the 2nd century by the Romans, who planted the "vitis biturica", a grape variety considered to be the ancestor of cabernet. The vineyard develops in an oceanic climate, on soils of gravel, silt, reddish earth where malbec and merlot are particularly suited, and clay-limestone soils.
Tasting characteristics of Côtes-de-Bourg
The red wines of this appellation have a dark red colour. On the nose there are aromas of red fruits, prune, as well as spicy and woody notes with vanilla in particular. The palate is round, elegant, the tannins are silky, and one is seduced by a slight chocolate note.
The red Côtes-de-Bourg can be enjoyed with red meats, duck confit, mushroom recipes, and cheeses such as morbier or fourme d'ambert will be perfectly suited.
The Côtes-de-Bourg Blanc has a greenish-yellow colour. The nose develops floral, citrus and peach scents. On the palate, this is a very harmonious white wine, the floral aromas continue, accompanied by a pleasant fat character.
This white wine is a perfect accompaniment to seafood, fish, asparagus, but also white meats, it will be very appreciated with a blanquette of veal. It will also be a successful match with a fine apple pie.
