Clos Saint Martin

Clos Saint Martin is a vineyard created in 1850. With a surface area of two hectares and just under one and a half hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes, it is without doubt the smallest of Saint Emilion's crus classés. Its remarkable location, in the heart of this exceptional terroir and surrounded by the appellation's four Premiers Crus Classés, also makes it one of its most precious jewels. Find out more

The winemaker

The producer

Sophie Fourcade, the owner, is the descendant of a great Burgundy winegrowing family. Since the 17th century, the Reiffers have owned several large wine estates, including Le Clos Saint Martin. These family properties were sold to the Cuvelier family in 2013.

However, Sophie Fourcade, who is particularly attached to Le Clos Saint Martin, which she has managed since 1998, has bought back the majority of shares. She claims to cultivate her vines in her own micro-vineyard, like "a parish priest's garden".

The estate

Clos Saint Martin enjoys an ideal location on the south-western slope of the limestone plateau in the Saint Emilion Grand Cru appellation. The vines are 35 years old on average, planted in well-exposed clay-limestone soils. Numerous investments are planned for the winery, plantings and renovation of the Presbytery. The estate is open to wine tourism and can be visited by appointment.

The estate's winemaking practices combine traditional and modern methods to produce top-quality wines. The grapes are harvested by hand, vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, and malolactic fermentation and ageing are carried out in new barrels only.

Limited production, but exceptional quality

Much to the regret of connoisseurs, the estate's surface area only allows for a small production of 5,000 bottles, made using integrated farming methods.

Le Clos Saint-Martin, Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Emilion appellation is an exceptional cuvée, made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The predominance of Merlot produces an elegant, velvety wine, with a dark color and fine licorice notes. It also has excellent ageing potential, from 10 to 50 years.
