The winemaker
A historical legacy
In 2001, the Cuvelier family bought the Clos Fourtet estate, 20 hectares of vines in a single block, the smallest classified vineyard in Saint-Émilion. Completed in 2008 by the acquisition of Château Poujeaux, followed by Château Côte de Baleau in 2013, Château Les Grandes Murailles was added to the family's holdings, making it an emblem of Saint-Émilion.
The entire estate is steeped in the region's history and is a place of pilgrimage for all wine and history aficionados. Indeed, the stone remains of the former monastery are a reminder of a rich and tumultuous past marked by wars and other vicissitudes. Today, the Cuvelier family has invested in the estate to restore it to its former glory.
Philippe Cuvelier's son Matthieu is now at the helm of the estate, in a perpetual quest for oenological perfection. To achieve this, father and son have decided to manage their vineyards responsibly, applying the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture.
Preserved terroir
Ideally situated on the highest slopes of Saint-Émilion, Clos Fourtet benefits from a unique soil quality dominated by limestone but with exceptional drainage properties. The resulting wines are marked by incomparable minerality and freshness. As far as aromas are concerned, they are marked by the predominance of Merlot in the vineyard, revealing red and black fruit flavors with vegetal touches in the most recent vintages.
The presence of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc adds complexity and ageing potential to these fine, well-balanced wines. The vines are cultivated in an environmentally-friendly manner. Indeed, the heritage of this place is unique and must be preserved. For this reason, Clos Fourtet controls yields and increases planting density.
Finally, this accompaniment is done in communion with nature insofar as everything is put in place to limit the impact of grape growing and winemaking on the environment. The estate cultivates a rich ecosystem in order to benefit from a high level of biodiversity.
Unique cellars
Clos Fourtet is the guardian of a secret buried beneath its vines. Indeed, beneath the vineyard lies a 13-hectare system of quarries. A place that could be described as mystical, it serves as the estate's cellars, and it's in the immensity of this enclave that the wines packaged in over 100,000 bottles are aged, and the primeurs mature in some 250 barrels.
It's a magnificent, timeless sanctuary where pure air and a cool climate guarantee outstanding ageing for Clos Fourtet's nuggets.
