Clos des Lunes

4.1
(7 customer reviews)
Le Clos des Lunes is a winery located in the commune of Sauternes, in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region. The Sauternes region stretches along the left bank of the Garonne River. This region owes its worldwide reputation to its twenty-six Crus Classés in 1855. When he founded Clos des Lunes, Olivier Bernard decided to create dry white cuvées, rather than the sweet wines so famous in Sauternes. Find out more

The winemaker

The history of Clos des Lunes

The story of Clos des Lunes is linked to that of Olivier Bernard, who decided to move to the Sauternes region in 2011 and join forces with his family's Domaine de Chevalier, located not far from Léognan, to produce a dry white wine.

In addition to working on the wine itself, Olivier Bernard created a bottle with an original curve, a new cork, a short cap and a deep blue label.

The Clos des Lunes vineyard

The Clos des Lunes vineyard covers 60 hectares planted exclusively with white grape varieties. Semillon accounts for 70% and Sauvignon Blanc for 30%. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Annual production is 250,000 bottles.

The soil of the Sauternes region is made up of red clay in Barsac and large, deep, airy gravel on the heights of Sauternes. The subsoil is composed of a clay-limestone substratum. This soil structure enables the old vines to reach deep down into the earth for the nutrients and water they need to grow in the best possible conditions.

The Clos des Lunes vineyards are planted on slopes with good drainage and a dense network of underground waterways. This combination ensures optimal hydration for the vines. Olivier Bernard has chosen to feature Sémillon, whose power and depth, as well as finesse and elegance, he praises. These qualities produce complex, precise wines with great aromatic purity.

The terroir is treated with the greatest respect and in the most natural way possible. The grapes are harvested by hand.

The Clos des Lunes wines

Clos des Lunes offers three cuvées: Clos des Lunes Lune d'Or, Clos des Lunes Lune d'Argent and the Clos des Lunes Lune Blanche.

Clos des Lunes Lune d'Or

Clos des Lunes Lune d'Or is the estate's first wine and produced in limited quantities. It is a blend of 67% Semillon and 33% Sauvignon.

This is a wine of great purity, both brilliant and elegant. Full-bodied, with a rich structure and great ageing potential. It boasts a splendid light yellow color, bright and luminous, with pale green highlights.

The nose is full of white peaches, almonds, citrus fruit, white acacia flowers and honeysuckle. Its palate is greedy and exquisite, perfectly balanced.

Clos des Lunes Lune d'Argent

Clos des Lunes Lune d'Argent is the estate's majority production. The wine is a blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon.

It has a light yellow color with pale green highlights. Its nose is fruity and floral, with a dominant of exotic white fruits. The palate is generous and intensely fruity.
