The winemaker
An adventure of family and passion
Château Vieux Mougnac has been owned by the Milhard family since the mid-14th century, when Felix and Elisabeth Milhard moved to the Bordeaux region to farm the land, originally in mixed farming. It was not until 1870 that they acquired additional plots of land where they decided to plant vines. From there, they became winegrowers, producing grapes from the merlot variety, emblematic of the Saint-Emilion region. Their children took over and continued making red wine until Maxime, the son of Felix and Elisabeth, was taken prisoner by the Germans during World War II. It was through his work in the camps that he discovered white grape varieties and their production methods. At the end of the war, he brought back his new knowledge and applied it to his domain. The first white wines of Château Vieux Mougnac were born. Then, once again, the reins of the estate passed into the hands of descendants and it was Yves, Maxime's son, accompanied by his wife Maria, who found themselves in charge of the property. Both refuse the industrialization that is making its way into wine-making practices and continue to conduct their vineyards according to traditional methods that correspond today to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture.
Today, it is the 4th, 5th and 6th generations of Milhard who work at Chateau Vieux Mougnac perpetuating the environmentally friendly practices that have never left the guiding line of the house.
An organic vineyard serving great wines
Spread over 10 hectares, the estate of Château Vieux Mougnac is typical of the Grand Saint-Émilionnais region because of its grape varieties. Indeed, Merlot and Cabernet Franc share the hectares of red grapes, while a small hectare of Semillon reigns supreme over the white grapes. The elements of the terroir, which are the soil and the climate, are aligned in such a way as to create an ecosystem that is more than favorable to the complete blossoming of the vine, since we find an oceanic climate that comes to cool down the hot lands in summer, and a sandy-clay soil that favors the development of the vine. The work that the Milhard family has been doing for 5 generations at the heart of its estate was finally rewarded in 2012 by the Organic Agriculture certification that it received. It is thanks to these practices that the biodiversity within the vineyard of Château Vieux Mougnac is luxuriant and preserved. The vineyard benefits from a rich environment to flourish and produce high potential berries. Château Vieux Mougnac vinifies each year a unique reference of the same name belonging to the AOC Bordeaux Supérieur. Depending on the year, the nose is sometimes black fruit, sometimes red fruit and is regularly characterized by spicy notes. The oldest vintages available will go perfectly with a nice piece of meat while the latest vintages will sublimate your cheeses or brighten up your aperitifs.
