The winemaker
The terroir of Château Rozier-Morillons is made up of sloping hillsides typical of the Cadillac area in the Côtes de Bordeaux. The vineyard consists of 18.3 hectares of vines with 9.7 hectares of red grape varieties and 8.6 hectares of white grape varieties.
The plateaus are silty on a clay subsoil. They are mainly reserved for white grape varieties: Semillon for the sweet and syrupy wines, Sauvignon and Muscadelle for the dry whites. A few plots of Merlot are also found on these plateaus. The slopes are also made up of gravel on a clay subsoil. They are mainly south-facing and are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which dominate our red wine blend. A small proportion of Malbec adds complexity to the blend.
The estate has always favoured respect for the terroir in order to make the best wines, even if the general trend was different. This is why we have always kept a balance between the areas of red and white vines, and why our grape varieties are dominated by Cabernets, which are difficult to work with but particularly well adapted to our soils. We have also resisted the fashion for wide vines and we try to maintain our old vines as best we can.
We also apply an approach that is increasingly respectful of the environment and biodiversity. In 2019, we obtained the High Environmental Value certification (level 3) and we are starting an organic conversion for our red wines since 2020. It is this choice of a blend dictated by a preserved terroir that gives our wines their personality and originality.
