The winemaker
A great wine from a land of legend: from the top of a knoll a stone's throw from the town of Blaye, Roland de Roncevaux, Charlemagne's nephew, is said to have thrown his javelin into the waters of the Gironde. The year was 775. Having thus proved his valour and strength, he then set off on an expedition. Forming the rear guard of Charlemagne's army, he was killed at Roncesvalles. In Saint Seurin-de-Cursac, where the mound is located today, this legend has given its name to a village, "La Garde à Roland", and its terroir, to which men have become attached. With valour and strength, the wine that has been matured here for two generations is a worthy heir to the values espoused by the valiant Roland.
