The winemaker

The history of Château Rauzan-Ségla

Pierre Desmesures de Rauzan, who gave his name to the château, acquired it in 1661, after having been a farmer at Château Margaux and then at Latour. The Baroness de Ségla, one of his descendants, later added to the family name.

The Château Rauzan-Ségla vineyard

The Château Rauzan-Ségla vineyard covers 66 hectares in the heart of the Margaux appellation. The grape varieties are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 3.5% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years. Average annual production is 230,000 bottles, of which almost half is devoted to the first wine (110,000 bottles).

The terroir is highly diversified. It is composed of deep, clayey gravel, clay-limestone soils and fine gravel. The estate is run with respect for the environment. In 2010, 4 hectares were converted to organic farming. Grapes are harvested by hand and by plot.
