The winemaker
The history of the estate
The origins of the estate go back a long way, to the 10th century with the foundation of the Prieuré de Cantenac in Romanesque times by monks. Pope Clement V gave his support to church vineyards from the 13th century onwards, enabling them to develop considerably.
In 1745, following a certain increase in interest in Médoc wines, the vineyard's wines entered the Classification de l'Intendance de Bordeaux in the category of third growths for the parishes of Margaux and Cantenac.
In 1855, the second classification, Le Prieuré became the fourth Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Gironde Wine Classification. The château's history continued until it was bought by Alexis Lichine in 1951, who renamed it Château Prieuré-Lichine in 1953. The arrival of Lichine marked the revival of this Margaux cru and its export to the rest of the world.
Today, Château Prieuré-Lichine's vineyards cover more than 80 hectares, 78 of which are devoted to red wine production and 2 to white wine.
The terroir
Château Prieuré-Lichine is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation, on a Romanesque ecclesiastical residence.
The estate's vines grow on a mosaic of soils spread over the five communes of the Margaux AOC. The soils are mainly gravel (a mixture of pebbles, gravel, sand and clay sediments).
Over 80 hectares of vines are planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot for the red wines. White wines are made with 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon.
Committed to environmental protection, Château Prieuré-Lichine has been awarded level 3 High Environmental Value certification.
The wines
In the winery, the wines are vinified in tulip-shaped vats, a symbol of technical progress and modern design.
Cuvée Château Prieuré-Lichine is a grand cru classé de 1855 with great ageing potential (several decades for great vintages). Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, it adopts a style unique to the Margaux AOC, making it the perfect accompaniment to traditional French dishes.
Cuvée Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine is the château's second wine, again in the Margaux AOC. A blend dominated by Merlot, it has a shorter shelf-life (10 years maximum) and stands out for its strong roundness and very silky tannins on the palate. It can be enjoyed on any occasion, as an aperitif or as part of a convivial meal with friends.
