The winemaker
The history of Château Poujeaux
Château Poujeaux was first known in the Middle Ages as Terre de Poujeaux. Located in Moulis in the Médoc, it was a seigneury dependent on Latour Saint Mambert, the future Château Latour, Premier Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. Château Poujeaux became independent and produced its own wine during the 19th century.
The Château Poujeaux estate appeared to be divided into three sections, before being taken over by the Theil family at the end of the 20th century, who set about reunifying the land. By 1956, Château Poujeaux consisted of 100 hectares of land, of which 70 hectares were devoted to vineyards in a single block.
In 2008, Château Poujeaux was taken over by the Cuvelier family, already owners of the famous Clos Fourtet, Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint Émilion. Today, Matthieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne jointly manage the estate.
The Château Poujeaux vineyard
The 70 hectares of Château Poujeaux vineyards - all in one block - are planted exclusively with red grapes. The grape varieties are 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.
Merlot brings its roundness and charm to accompany the energy and tension provided by Cabernet Sauvignon. Petit Verdot may be in the minority, but it remains essential to the solid structure of Château Poujeaux wines and enriches their aromatic palette. Cabernet Franc is selected to give the wine intense complexity.
Château Poujeaux's vines stretch over magnificent gravelly slopes to the northeast of Moulis in the Médoc. The average age of the vines is 35 years, and average annual production is 330,000 bottles.
The Château Poujeaux estate is run using integrated farming methods. The land is worked with the greatest care, respecting nature and the seasons. The products used are natural and the work is essentially manual, including the grape harvest.
The wines of Château Poujeaux
Château Poujeaux
Château Poujeaux is an intense wine with aromas dominated by red and black fruits. It boasts a magnificent intense ruby color.
The wine's lively attack is followed by exceptional length. The palate is voluminous and the tannins are always present, but balanced. This is a highly structured wine with excellent ageing potential.
Château Poujeaux represents an average of 250,000 bottles a year.
The Château Poujeaux Room
Château Poujeaux's second wine, La Salle de Château Poujeaux, plays on a subtle, yet bold blend that blends the delicacy of fresh fruit with the richness of riper fruit.
This wine should be drunk young to benefit from its supple tannins. However, it can also be laid down.
La Salle de Château Poujeaux produces 80,000 bottles each year.
