The winemaker
From Versailles to Pauillac, the history of Château Pontet-Canet
After serving as Grand Écuyer to Louis XV in Versailles, Jean-François de Pontet became Governor of the Médoc. In 1705, he bought land north of the village of Pauillac, which he intended to develop into a vineyard of the highest quality. Some of the plots he bought a few years later were located on land known as Canet. It was then that he associated this name with his own, and Château Pontet-Canet was born.
A century later, Château Pontet-Canet became a Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification ordered by Emperor Napoleon III. Until 1989, when Alfred Tesseron took over the estate, Château Pontet-Canet was owned by only three families.
After a period of organic viticulture, the estate switched to biodynamic viticulture and today produces wines of great renown in the Bordeaux region.
The terroir of Château Pontet-Canet
The Château Pontet-Canet vineyard covers 81 hectares in the commune of Pauillac. Like all great Pauillacs, the vines benefit from the lean, well-drained limestone soil, which is so well-suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon.
The complementary Cabernet Franc is located in the center of the Günz's Garonne gravelly hilltop. Merlot, which is part of the blend, occupies the clay-gravel soils. Finally, Petit Verdot, which brings its spicy aromas, occupies three parcels on the edge of the croup.
From organic to biodynamic, and from tractors to horses
The switch to biodynamic viticulture brings added sparkle to Château Pontet-Canet wines. The wines are now certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Biodyvin for the entire vineyard since 2010, and by Demeter since 2014.
Since 2008, three Breton horses have helped run the estate. Since then, others have been added. They enable the vines to be cultivated without over-compacting the soil, which favors root development. As well as improving the quality of the vines, the sound of hooves in the yard is a welcome alternative to noisy, smelly tractor engines.
Harvesting is, of course, carried out by hand, with careful sorting to ensure that only the best grapes are kept.
The wines of Château Pontet-Canet
What's immediately striking is the energy that emanates from the wines of Château Pontet-Canet. Their brilliance, but also their exceptional balance, is attributed to a return to their roots, with the most natural biodynamic cultivation and the help of draught horses. The wines have a fleshy, fruity taste, with always a beautiful elegance.
Château Pontet-Canet
Château Pontet-Canet boasts a deep, brilliant purple color. The nose is fresh, blending fruity, floral and mineral notes. The palate is harmonious, with a fine tannic structure and appreciable length.
Hauts de Pontet-Canet
Hauts de Pontet-Canet also boasts an intense purple color. Beyond the aromas of red and black fruits, a taste of cedar gives it its originality. The palate is supple, magnified by fine tannins.
