The winemaker

The History of the Pierre I Castle

Château Pierre 1er was known before 2013 as Château Croix Figeac. This family property, founded in 1984, was ordered by the courts to abandon the name of Croix Figeac, following the request of its neighbor and almost namesake Chateau Figeac. The name Château Pierre 1er was chosen in honor of the estate's founder, Pierre Dutruilh.

Today it is Pierre's son, Jean, a former ski champion, who manages the estate. He took over the estate in 1990 and benefited from his father's know-how who taught him the culture of the vine and the love of wine making.

Belonging to the prestigious Saint Emilion appellation, the Château Pierre 1er estate is also very close to the very famous Château Cheval Blanc.

The vineyard of Château Pierre 1er

The vineyard of Château Pierre 1er covers 11 hectares belonging to the Saint Émilion appellation. The soil is composed of gravel and is rich in clay, limestone and sand. The vineyard is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 30 years. The average annual production is 55,000 bottles.

The estate of Château Pierre 1er is managed with the greatest respect for the environment and biodiversity. It is certified HVE, High Environmental Value. The grape harvest is manual and is done in crates, as well as the sorting of the grapes which is the subject of two successive selections, in order to keep only the fruits whose maturity is perfect.

The wines of Château Pierre 1er

The wine of Château Pierre 1er enjoys an excellent reputation within the Saint Emilion appellation. Since the estate was founded in 1984, the quality has continued to improve, while maintaining reasonable prices that delight consumers.

The wine of Château Pierre 1er has a sublime brilliant ruby color. In its early youth, it displays garnet reflections that change with time into purple nuances. The nose is particularly concentrated and dominated by aromas of small red fruits. It then develops a very broad aromatic range that blends vanilla, figs, cooked prunes, roasted almonds and wood.

The aromatic palette present in the nose is found in the tasting. The mouth is ample and generous. It perfectly represents the qualities of the wines of the Saint Emilion appellation, with full-bodied flavors, backed by a robust structure.

During the first years, the tannins are very present, yet supple. The fleshy side is appreciable. With maturity, the wine softens, at the same time as it becomes more complex.

The wine of Château Pierre 1er goes wonderfully with red meats, as well as poultry and game birds, such as pheasant with grapes or squab with lentils.
