The winemaker

The castle's history

The history of Château Pichon-Longueville has its roots in the late 17th century with the 1694 marriage of Baron Jacques Pichon to Thérèse Desmezures de Rauzan, owner of the estate and steward of the Latour and Margaux estates.

In 1850, the estate was split in two and the part belonging to Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville became the Domaine de Pichon-Longueville (or Domaine de Pichon Baron). In 1851, Baron Raoul had the prestigious Renaissance-style château built.

In 1855, on the occasion of the World's Fair, Château Pichon-Longueville's wine was ranked second grand cru in the official classification of Bordeaux wines.

In 1933, the estate was sold to the Bouteiller family, who managed it for 50 years. In 1987, AXA Millésimes bought the estate with the aim of exploiting the full potential of great wines from vineyards with a prestigious past. At the same time, the estate was modernized and returned to its former glory.

The terroir

Château Pichon-Longueville is located in the Pauillac terroir, some forty kilometers north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde.

On the gravel, pebble and sand soils typical of the appellation, the vines grow perfectly. The subsoils store rainwater for the roots, and the natural relief ensures good drainage.

In addition, the oceanic climate, softened by proximity to the Gironde estuary, brings together all the conditions needed to make Pauillac wines prestigious Bordeaux wines.

Château Pichon Baron extends over 73 hectares of vines, with an average age of 35 years. To produce the Château Pichon Baron cuvée, the oldest vines are selected for the quality of their fruit.

The vineyard is planted with 65% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet-Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The parcels are carefully selected, so that each one benefits from precise work adapted to its terroir and climate.

The wines

Previously producing just one cuvée, Château Pichon Baron has been producing a second wine, "Les Tourelles de Longueville", since 1986. Since 2012, a third wine has been produced: "Les Griffons de Pichon Baron".

The Château Pichon Baron 2014 is a wine with a dark, intense, almost black color. Its expressive nose offers a wide aromatic palette: black fruits, spices, undergrowth... It is elegant and subtle. On the palate, the wine is woody, with a straight, precise and fleshy attack. The tannins do not cover the fruit and are greedy.

Cuvée Les Tourelles de Longueville 2015 offers a dark ruby color and a nose with aromas of red fruits (blackcurrant, wild strawberry) and sweet spices. On the palate, the attack is fresh and elegant. The wine's structure is powerful, the body harmonious and the finish balanced.
