The winemaker

The history of an exceptional estate

The Pétrus estate owes its name to the locality on which its land is located, the place being named after Saint-Pierre (Petrus in Latin), depicted with the keys to Paradise on the wine label. The vineyard does not have a château but only a winery, so the name "Château Pétrus" is inaccurate and an abuse of language.

Owned by the Arnaud family, the estate was bought between 1925 and 1945 by Edmonde Loubat, a Libourne hotelier. In 1947, she joined forces with Jean-Pierre Moueix, a local wine merchant, to make the most of the terroir's potential and compete with the great Médoc wines.

The wine was soon presented at the wedding banquet of Elizabeth II in the UK and to the Kennedy family in the USA. In 1970, the vineyard was enlarged from 7 to 11.5 hectares by the purchase of 4.5 hectares from neighboring Gazin.

In 2001, Jean-François Moueix, son of Jean-Pierre, took over the estate. His other son, Christian, managed the estate until 2008. Oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet is in charge of wine-making, and is succeeded by his son Olivier Berrouet from 2008. In 2018, 20% of the estate was sold to American billionaire Alejandro Santo Domingo.

A unique terroir

Domaine de Pétrus is located in the commune of Pomerol, on the highest point of a plateau between northeast Libourne and the western edge of Saint-Emilion. The vineyard covers 11.4 hectares, with a density of 6,000 vines/hectare.

The soils are a mixture of gravel and blue clay. This confers a high percentage of iron, which is unique in the region. The clay allows the vines to be constantly supplied with water, even in times of prolonged drought.

Since 2010, the vineyard has been planted with 100% Merlot, on vines over 40 years old.

Prestigious wines

The wines produced by Domaine Pétrus are of rare quality. Numerous Pétrus vintages have received the perfect 100/100 rating from Robert Parker: 2010, 2009, 2000, 1990, 1989, 1961, 1947, 1929, 1921.

Pétrus are described as wines of great elegance, with a complex, powerful nose and particularly opulent fruit aromas. It combines tension and refinement, with a touch of density. Its taffeta texture and floral returns make it shine and stand out among the world's greatest wines.
