The winemaker

The history of Château Petit-Village

After a succession of different owners in the 19th century, Fernand Ginestet, a renowned Bordeaux wine merchant, came to head the estate. In 1971, his daughter took over, before handing over to her son Bruno Prats, who significantly improved the estate. For reasons of succession, the Prats family sold Château Petit-Village in 1989, the year in which AXA Millésimes (the insurance group's winegrowing arm) became the owner. The group decided to restructure the vineyard and renovate the winery and cellars. Since the beginning of 2020, the property has belonged to the Moulin family.

Chateau Petit-Village's organic commitment

Château Petit-Village has held HVE (High Environmental Value) Level 3 certification since 2018. In 2020, the estate will begin its conversion to organic farming, with the aim of obtaining certification in 2022.The estate cultivates plant cover crops: a natural method that optimizes the structure and biological life of the soil. The old vines, planted in 1948, are worked using horse-drawn ploughing. This method reduces soil compaction between the vines.

The Château Petit-Village vineyard

The ten-and-a-half hectares of Château Petit-Village, in the shape of a triangle, are located in a single block on a clay-gravel plateau. The terroir, which is homogeneous throughout the estate, consists mainly of deep gravel coated with light, sandy clay on a subsoil known as "crasse de fer", characteristic of Pomerol wines. The gravel reflects the sun onto the grapes and ensures good natural drainage. The clay keeps the subsoil cool, an enormous asset in times of drought.

The south-western exposure of the vines guarantees optimal sunshine. Each plot is planted with the grape variety best suited to the terroir. Merlot dominates the estate (75%). It gives the wines smoothness, roundness and generosity. Next come Cabernet Franc (18%) and Cabernet-Sauvignon (7%). The grapes are harvested by hand, bunch by bunch. The bunches are selected again before being stored in cold rooms to keep the grapes at a temperature of 5°C. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats. The wines are aged in oak barrels for an average of 15 months.

The wines of Château Petit-Village

"Château Petit-Village is made from a blend of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Franc (32%) and Cabernet-Sauvignon (8%). This complex wine combines the power and elegance of Pomerol's clay terroirs. "Le Jardin de Petit-Village", the estate's second wine, is made exclusively from Merlot. It's a round, elegant and harmonious wine to be enjoyed quickly. Wines from the Pomerol appellation are fruity and have great minerality. If you enjoy your Pomerol quickly, remember to decant it before serving, so that it can release its aromas. They go very well with red meats and all terroir dishes.
