The winemaker
The history of Château Penin
Château Penin entered the Carteyron family in 1855, when Louis acquired it with his son Jacques. The property was then divided between viticulture and orchards of nectarines and peaches. Château Penin was then passed on to Hubert Carteyron, who worked with his son Patrick. It was Hubert who began bottling and marketing Château Penin wine in 1964.
Since 1982, when he took over the estate, Patrick has brilliantly represented the fifth generation of Carteryon winemakers. At that time, he decided to cease orcharding and devote the property's entire 15 hectares to viticulture.
Since then, he has continued to expand his estate, which now covers almost 50 hectares. Acquisitions are always strategic, choosing only the best parcels and favoring adjoining terroirs so that they can be grouped together, facilitating their reasoned exploitation.
The Château Penin vineyard
Château Penin's 46 hectares of vineyards are farmed using a sustainable agroecological approach. Château Penin has been awarded the HVE (High Environmental Value) label. The climate is temperate oceanic. The vines benefit from the influence of the Gulf Stream and the Landes forest. In addition, a wide band of pine trees provides an effective screen against the Atlantic winds.
Since 2020, Château Penin has been involved in the reforestation initiative launched by the ReforestACTION association. Every time the number of pallets sold reaches 5, the estate commits to buying a tree that is planted in an eco-managed forest. This represents around 100 trees planted annually.
Chateau Penin wines
The 46-hectare vineyard is divided into five major zones.
-3 hectares of pebble terroir for Les Cailloux wine: vines over 30 years old with Merlot grapes
. The 4-hectare sandy-clay terroir for the Natur Rouge wine, with Merlot vines over 10 years old.
. The 7-hectare clay and gravel terroir for the Clairet wine, with vines over 8 years old and Merlot and Cabernet grapes.
. -The clay-limestone terroir extends over 7 hectares. It produces Penin Blanc with vines over 10 years old, a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris; Penin Rosé, a blend of Cabernet and Merlot from vines over 6 years old; Excess / Déconfiné Rosé, with young Merlot and Cabernet vines.
-The terroir has deep gravel on 25 hectares of vines reaching 60 years of age. The wines produced are Grande Sélection, with Merlot vines between 30 and 60 years old; Tradition, with Cabernet and Merlot vines between 7 and 30 years old; Excess Rouge / Déconfiné, with young Merlot and Cabernet vines; and Cuvée Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Franc vines over 10 years old.
Since 2011 Patrick Carteyron has acquired a 2.5-hectare property in the Saint Émilion Grand Cru appellation, Château La Fleur Penin.
