The winemaker
The history of Château Pédesclaux
The Château Pédesclaux estate was founded in 1810, by Pierre Urbain Pédesclaux who was already a famous Bordeaux wine broker. From then on, he constantly enlarged his vineyard with new plots, notably those of the neighboring Grand Puy estate. After his death, his widow took over the management until 1891.
Château Pédesclaux changed ownership several times during the 20th century. Since 2009, it has belonged to the Lorenzetti family, who decided to thoroughly renovate the estate. The vineyard has been completely restructured, and its surface area has almost doubled, from 26 to 48 hectares, thanks to the acquisition of Château Haut-Milon in 2009, followed by Château Béhéré in 2013.
The château is renovated, as are the wine processing and ageing facilities. A new 100% gravity-fed winery is built.
The Château Pédesclaux vineyard
The vineyard now covers almost 50 hectares in the Pauillac appellation. The terroir comprises 19 different soil types. The soil consists of deep gravel, partially mixed with clay and limestone.
The vineyards are farmed organically, and some plots are biodynamic. The grape varieties are 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 35 years, with the oldest dating back to 1950.
Cabernet Sauvignon is selected to give the wine structure, Merlot adds roundness, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contribute to the wine's aromatic complexity.
The wines of Château Pédesclaux
The Château Pédesclaux estate produces two red wines:
Château Pédesclaux, grand vin, grand cru classé 1855, appellation Pauillac
Château Pédesclaux's first wine is a reflection of the terroir from which it comes: complex. The wine is a blend of 59% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet franc. It benefits from clays that sublimate its power and gravels that give it all its elegance.
Château Pédesclaux is dense and voluptuous. The nose is full of fruity flavors, notably blackcurrant and violets, backed by cigar box aromas. The wine expresses silky tannins and stands out as an excellent wine for laying down.
Fleur de Pédesclaux, second wine, Pauillac appellation
The estate's second wine, Fleur Pédesclaux, is composed of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The wine is gourmand and particularly airy. The Merlot adds sweetness, while the Cabernet Sauvignon structures the wine to better express its intense, crisp, flavorful fruit aromas.
The nose is powerful, with flavors of violets and red berries. The palate is fresh and supple, with smooth tannins and a high-quality finish. An excellent wine for laying down, it gains aromas of white flowers with age.
