The winemaker
The estate: its history and owner
Like most Saint-Émilion vineyards, this one dates back to Roman times. The estate was assembled by Ferdinand Bouffard in the late 19th century, purchasing parcels from several families. However, Mr. Bouffard struggled with phylloxera and sold it to Albert Porte at the end of the First World War. In 1943, he sold it to Alexandre Valette.
In 1998, Gérard Perse, the current owner, bought it from the latter's grandson, Jean-Paul Valette, for $31 million. Gérard Perse is none other than a Parisian millionaire and former cyclist who sold two supermarket chains to finance his entry into the wine industry. Before acquiring Château Pavie, he bought Château Monbousquet in 1993 and Château Pavie-Décesse in 1997.
Vineyard and winemaking
Château Pavie's vineyards cover an area of almost 37 hectares. It produces AOC Saint-Émilion grand cru and AOC Bordeaux red wines. The grape varieties include :
Merlot noir (60%)
Cabernet-Franc noir (30%)
Cabernet-Sauvignon noir (10%)
The estate's vines are cultivated according to the principles of integrated viticulture. When it comes to vinifying its grapes, Château Pavie has adopted the traditional method. Depending on the desired cuvée, the musts are vinified directly in thermo-regulated wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation then takes place for the red wines, which are neither fined nor filtered.
The wines of Château Pavie
Château Pavie produces two types of Bordeaux red wine. The first, "Grand Vin de Pavie", is a wine of powerful, full-bodied character. The second, "Arôme de Pavie", is softer and less woody. The Château and its production have greatly improved since the arrival of its new owner, Gérard Perse.
And as proof, the 1998 vintage marked a major turning point in quality for Domaine Pavie. Château Pavie has won international acclaim, thanks in no small part to four top scores of 100/100 from Robert Parker in 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010.
The prestigious Château Pavie, located 35 km east of Bordeaux, is the neighbor of several estates such as "La Gaffelière", "Larcis Ducasse" and "Pavie Décesse". Bottles of Château Pavie wine are true gems for many wine lovers and enthusiasts.
