The winemaker
The history of Château Pape Clément
The first harvests at Château Pape Clément date back to 1252, a time when the vineyard was called Domaine de la Mothe. From 1299, the château was owned by Gaillard de Goth, whose brother Bertrand de Goth had just been appointed Archbishop of Bordeaux, preventing him from purchasing the property himself.
In 1305, Bertrand De Goth became Pope Clement V. When his brother died in 1306, he inherited the estate and named it Château Pape Clément. Clement V took a keen interest in viticulture, and actively promoted its development in the Rhône Valley and around Avignon. After several owners over the centuries, Château Pape Clément was bought by the agricultural engineer Paul Montagne. He renovated the facilities and restructured the vineyard.
In 1985, Bernard Magrez took over the estate. This entrepreneur with a passion for wine introduced parcel-based vinification, bringing unparalleled complexity and refinement. The estate returned to top-quality production, and is now exported all over the world.
The terroir of Château Pape Clément
The Château Pape Clément terroir covers 60 hectares in the Graves wine-growing area and belongs to the Pessac Léognan appellation d'origine contrôlée. It is unique in that it lies on the oldest of the alluvial terraces, known as the "nappe des graves pyrénéennes".
The grape varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for red wine production. For white wine production, the grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Sémillon and Muscadelle. Cultivation is carried out in the traditional way: manual labor, Guyot-Poussard pruning, animal traction, manual ginning and natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Château Pape Clément also retains the old terracotta jar vinification process.
