The winemaker
The history of Château Palmer
Château Palmer was called Domaine de Gasq in the 18th century and belonged to Madame de Gasq. Vines were already grown on her land, and her wines were served at the court of Versailles. In 1814, it was bought by British lieutenant-colonel Charles Palmer, who gave it its definitive name.
Château Palmer went through a succession of owners. After the Second World War, it belonged to the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families. One of the heirs, Bertrand Bouteiller, took over management in 1999.
Since 2004, the administration of Château Palmer has been entrusted to Thomas Duroux by the heir shareholders of the société civile immobilière.
The Château Palmer vineyard
The Château Palmer vineyard covers 66 hectares of gravel in the heart of the Margaux appellation, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary. The grape varieties are based on three pillars: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon share the majority of the terroir equally, 47% each, while a few vines of Petit Verdot complete the remaining 6%.
Carbernet Sauvignon is the emblematic grape variety of Bordeaux, and more particularly of the Médoc. It brings its richness to Château Palmer wines. Merlot is chosen for the smoothness it brings to the wine. This generous, supple grape variety grows on Château Palmer's finest gravel terraces. Finally, Petit Verdot is used to refine the blends, adding the spicy touch for which Château Palmer wines are renowned.
Chateau Palmer wines
Château Palmer wines enjoy an extraordinary reputation and are appreciated for their elegance. The estate offers two main red wines, accompanied by two recently created newcomers. A white wine completes the offer.
Château Palmer red AOC Margaux
Château Palmer rouge takes up the proportions of the estate's grape varieties in its blend. This is the château's flagship wine, which has won numerous awards and prizes. An excellent wine for laying down.
This first Château Palmer wine offers exceptional aromatic richness. The wine is renowned for its balance, and the power of its tannins is always under control. The Merlot does its work and adds its original touch.
The wine is fleshy and velvety, as its deep, dense color promises. A full palette of aromas dominated by licorice and blackcurrant emanates from the nose. The palate is fruity, imbued with cherry, with a unique spicy touch.
Alter Ego rouge
Alter Ego is the second wine of Château Palmer. It is intended to be drunk younger. Alter Ego is softer and less typified than its elder sibling.
Château Palmer Blanc
Château Palmer also produces a white wine, made from Muscadelle, Sauvignon, Merlot Blanc and Lauzet grapes. This wine was created as a tribute to a cuvée that existed in the 1920s and had since been abandoned.
