The winemaker
The history of Château Olivier
Château Olivier was a seigneury in the High Middle Ages. It is said that its game-rich lands were a favorite hunting ground for Prince Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, Earl of Chester, Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Aquitaine, and eldest son of Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainaut, better known by his nickname the Black Prince. Since the 19th century, the estate has belonged to an old Bordeaux lineage, the de Bethmann family.
The Château Olivier vineyard
Château Olivier nestles in the heart of a vast, magnificent estate, made up of vineyards, but also meadows and forests. It sits in the middle of a clearing, where it displays its beautiful architecture and water features. Just 11 kilometers from Bordeaux, Château Olivier is a haven of greenery and peace, so far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Château Olivier has the rare distinction of being endowed with excellent terroirs for producing both white and red wines. Red wine, however, remains in the majority. A total of 60 hectares of gravelly terroir on a clay-limestone base are home to six different grape varieties.
The red wine grape varieties are 45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 20 years. For white wine, the grape varieties are 55% Semillon, 40% Sauvignon and the remaining 5% Muscadelle. The vines dedicated to white wine have an average age of 30 years.
