Château Marojallia

4.5
(7 customer reviews)
"Marojallia", the Latin name for Margaux in the time of Ausone (Roman philosopher), is the first "garage wine" from Margaux, a commune in the Gironde. "Garage wine" because the first vinification was indeed made in the owner's garage! From the very first tastings, "Marojallia" was hailed by critics as "unprecedented since 1945". Here's a look back at the difficult road it took to elevate this wine to the ranks of Bordeaux's finest. Find out more

The winemaker

A coveted legacy...

Roger Rex inherited six hectares of exceptional terroir from his parents. When, at the age of 74, Roger Rex lost his mobility, his prestigious neighbors dreamed of buying his vineyard. For Roger Rex, none of them liked the land enough to accept their proposals. Philippe Porcheron, who helped Roger Rex with his 1998 harvest, is as passionate as Roger Rex. He presented Roger Rex with an ambitious and crazy project: to produce "the best wine Margaux has ever known". Roger Rex accepted and embarked on the challenge with Philippe Porcheron, who already operated other prestigious estates. Jean-Luc and Muriel Thunevin help the two men in their mad gamble. The team they put together is a team of perfectionists: in the vineyards, anything that isn't perfect is eliminated! The grapes from each plot have a thick, dark-black skin and are bursting with sugar, enabling them to produce their first, very limited cuvée in 1999: "vin de garage". 1999 was also the year Philippe Porcheron bought Roger Rex's vineyards. Bernard Ginestet, a friend of Philippe Porcheron's, offered to house his vintage in his huge property at the entrance to the village of Margaux. In 2001, Philippe Porcheron bought the property and christened it Château Marojallia. The scores awarded to Marojallia during the Château's first harvest put it among the greatest wines of Bordeaux. So the initial project wasn't so crazy!

With its deep purple color, it exudes a superb bouquet of black fruits on the nose. On the palate, this velvety-textured wine reveals the richness and finesse of its infinitely supple tannins. The finish is long, interminable...

- Château Marojallia", with its perfect balance, is best served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C with beef or game.
