The winemaker
Birth of Château Margaux
The first traces of this château date back to the 12th century, referring to a fort known as Château de la Mothe Margaux, which did not yet have any vines. Successive owners were lords, but it was the arrival of the de Lestonnac family in 1572 that changed everything. In just ten years, they succeeded in completely restructuring the estate and the vineyards, anticipating the general evolution of the Médoc. By the end of the 17th century, Château Margaux covered 265 hectares.
A third of the estate was devoted to vines, as is still the case today. Margaux succeeded in creating a leading French red wine, obtaining AOC certification in 1954. This neo-Palladian château is currently the most important neoclassical building in Bordeaux.
The Château Margaux vineyard
Of Garonne origin, the soils of this vineyard are made up of medium and fine Günzian gravel, sometimes mixed with clay. Legend has it that the density of these gravels is so great that a well could be dug without the need for stonework. In the lower parts of the vineyard, it is possible to find limestone zones, more precisely the Plassac molasse. Today, the vineyard covers 99 hectares, 87 of which are devoted exclusively to red wines.
The estate produced a first wine named Château Margaux, then a second which saw the light of day under the name Pavillon Rouge. It was included in the official classification of Médoc grands crus in the 1850s as Premier cru classé de Margaux.
