The winemaker
The origins of Château les Carmes Haut-Brion
It all began in 1584, when Jean de Pontac donated a mill on the Peugue river, surrounded by vines and adjoining outbuildings, to the Catholic religious order of the Grands Carmes de Bordeaux. In 1630, the religious order extended the estate by purchasing additional vineyards. The Carmes retained the Haut-Brion appellation and owned it for almost 200 years.
The estate became a "Bien National" in 1791, before being purchased in 1840 by wine merchant Léon Colin. He renamed it Carmes Haut-Brion. He then passed it on to his family, who built the château we know today in the early 19th century. It remained in the same family until 2010. It was then that the Pichet real estate group acquired the estate. The initial purchase was followed by the acquisition of additional terroirs, including 17 hectares in a single block, bringing the estate to 35 hectares.
The vineyard
Originally, the vineyard was outside the walls. Today, it is entirely surrounded by the city and is a walled city vineyard. Historically, it covered 10 hectares, and today it covers 35 hectares. It benefits from a mild microclimate and a well-preserved ecosystem. The terroir is a blend of mindel gravel, sand and clay on a limestone subsoil. Today, the vineyards are an average of 13 years old and are made up of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.
The wines
Only natural products are used to work the soil, for a 100% organic result. Harvesting is done by hand, and tractors are gradually being replaced by horses. Vinification is carried out in round grapes with a small proportion of stalks, in vats ranging from 21 to 86 hectoliters.
For the Grand Vin, vinification is carried out in wooden barrels, foudres and terracotta amphoras for 18 to 24 months. For C des Carmes Haut-Brion, the wine is aged in wooden barrels (30% new) for 12 to 18 months, then in cement vats. The production facilities are located in the commune of Martillac.
The château has chosen to relaunch a bottle format in 2019: a 2.25-liter bottle. This has been designed to enable better conservation of the wine. The 2016 vintage was chosen for this new bottle with a blend made up of 41% Cabernet Franc, 39% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
