Château Le Gay
(5 customer reviews)
Owned by the Robin family for 60 years, the Pomerol wines offered by Thérèse and Marie Robin enjoyed great renown in the region. Without forgetting their father's motto, "Quality over quantity", they elevated the estate to the rank of a must in the appellation. The château is part of the Péré-Végé vineyard. Merlot is the only grape variety used to make Château Le Gay wines. It flourishes on gravelly clay-limestone soils, producing a superb, dense Pomerol with pure fruit. Find out more

The winemaker
Castle history
The origins of Château Le Gay go back to the 18th century with the Manoir de Gay in Pomerol. During a succession, this was divided between Château Lafleur and Château de Gay. Château de Gay passed into the hands of the Demoiselles Robin, who entrusted its management to the Moueix family, owners of the prestigious neighboring La Fleur-Petrus estate. The Demoiselles had little interest in becoming famous, and remained in the shadow of La Fleur-Petrus. When one of the sisters died, and the other was placed under guardianship, the estate lost its best plots, which were attached to those of La Fleur-Petrus.
The estate was slowly lost until it was bought by the Dame de Pomerol, Catherine Péré-Vergé, in 2002. She has been known as one of Bordeaux's wine revolutionaries since the late 20th century, and Vignobles Péré-Vergé now boasts six different châteaux.
Catherine Péré-Vergé, then her son Henri Parent, run the estate under the guidance of oenologist Michel Rolland, who advocates a philosophy of attention to the smallest detail to achieve perfection. Vinification is carried out entirely in barrels, producing generous, modern wines.
Terroir
Château Le Gay extends over 10.5 hectares of parcels. Composed mainly of Merlot (90%), which brings finesse and body, Cabernet Franc (10%) gives a touch of roundness, suppleness and fruit. Located in the heart of Pomerol, it enjoys an exceptional terroir.
The soils are composed of clayey and sandy gravel on the surface, with iron oxides at depth.
In addition to the land, exceptional work is carried out in the winery, which was completely renovated in 2003 and again in 2014. New work is taking place, enabling 100% of the parcels to be micro-vinified in new barrels.
A second wine is produced by the estate: Manoir de Gay.
The wines
Le Château Le Gay is a structured, full-bodied wine with dense, liquorice tannins, but also full of finesse. It's a good wine for laying down that should get rounder, more melted tannins with age.
Le Manoir De Gay is a wine with a fruity, floral nose, with some spicy and animal notes. The palate is full-bodied and dense with unctuous tannins, lifted by fruit notes and a long, expressive finish.
