The winemaker
The history of Château Lascombes
The oldest identified owner of the estate is Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes, born in 1625. He shared his estate with the House of Durfort de Duras, who already owned the land in the 14th century. It was not until the first half of the 18th century that the Durfort de Duras and Lascombes estates were separated.
As early as 1776, the wine produced on the estate was classified as second growth in Labadie's nomenclature of Guyenne wines. It was not until the end of the 18th century, just before the French Revolution, that Château Lascombes was built by Antoine's descendants. It subsequently had several owners.
In 1855, it was ranked second Grand Cru Classé du Médoc in the official classification of Bordeaux wines. In April 2001, Château Lascombes was acquired by the American group Colony Capital, and in July 2011, it was bought by the Mutuelle d'Assurances du Corps de Santé Français (MACSF).
The Château Lascombes vineyard
The Château Lascombes vineyard extends over three distinct terroirs of roughly equal surface area: clayey gravel where Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted; a gravelly croup dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot; and clay-limestone plots devoted entirely to Merlot.
The great diversity of soils and the predominance of Merlot - which accounts for just over half of the vineyard's plantings - give Château Lascombes wines an originality that sets them apart from other Margaux crus. The 120-hectare vineyard produces an average of 300,000 bottles.
The wines of Château Lascombes
Château Lascombes Margaux Rouge
Château Lascombes Margaux rouge is a blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Verdot. It's a powerful, elegant wine that surprises with its smoothness, backed by rich tannins. Its color is a deep red. The nose is dominated by black fruits, with a slight woody nuance. Its aromatic complexity is seductive and improves with age. The attack is explosive, and spices quickly make themselves felt. The long finish is reminiscent of chocolate.
Chevalier de Lascombes Margaux Rouge
Chevalier de Lascombes rouge is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The nose is fine and harmonious, charming with its roundness. The wine is easy-drinking and particularly fruity. Silky tannins come through on the finish.
Château Lascombes Haut Médoc Margaux Rouge
Château Lascombes Haut Médoc Margaux rouge is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 16% Petit Verdot. It comes from parcels classified as Haut Médoc. The nose is fresh, but still intense, with a blend of wild berries and red fruits. The palate is supple, with a soft, round attack. The tannins are quite fine for this wine, which should be enjoyed young to benefit from its exceptional fruitiness.
